Chapter Six

Near New Mexico

Colton waited outside, stomping his feet. Kandace rolled her eyes at him.

“Don’t you need to check this one?” he asked with a smile at her glare. “For your dad?”

She shook her head and again with the eye rolling when he started blowing into his gloves. They teased each other incessantly about how Kandace was never cold, and Colton seemed to always be freezing. “Nah,” she said. “Th---there was only like six people down there. Big family is my bet, they all looked related. Uber religious is what I’d w--wager. Probably live like this all year long.”

Rufus came outside interrupting what would no doubt be another eye roll, his face drawn.

“Anything?” Colton asked, and Rufus shook his head.

“No. They’re related. Another family bunker of preppers.”

Kandace pointed at the sky in victory. “And if he s--says Mormon, I get the last packet of hot chocolate,” she added, and Colton squinted at her before he nodded and he shook her hand.

“Deal. I get it if not.”

The last house they’d rummaged had given them what they now labeled “powdered gold”. They rationed it carefully, always. Rufus wasn’t half as into the stuff, rather on the hunt for coffee, and so it was Colton and Kandace who always had to work out who got the last one. Usually by some lame competition or wager.

“Tell us,” Colton said, and Rufus watched the exchange a moment before smiling with self importance.

He started walking, as if he wasn’t going to tell them.

“Jehovah’s Witnesses,” he called over his shoulder.

“Dammit!”

“Language,” Rufus said to Kandace, and Colton sighed in joy that the cocoa was all his. He needed something piping hot to heat himself up. He could never get warm, it felt like.

Together, they started walking. Their last truck broke down and they siphoned gas out of it, so they were in a small town trying to find a new ride to “borrow.”

They had been to six different places in Texas and had yet to find anyone any of them knew.

“I did learn something though,” Rufus said with a smile. “The army supposedly moved everyone to Huachuca. Could be a good place to try.”

“Huachuca. Arizona then?”

“Yeah.”

They were nearly to New Mexico as it was.

“This weather is taking a turn. Should we ask these people to stay?”

Kandace made gave a nasty glare and started walking and Colton laughed and followed behind her.

“I saw some houses this way, back in the sticks. Y---you should feel right at home,” she said to Colton.

“Yeah. Big city girl can teach us the ways of the fast life. I’ve seen your town. Or what’s left of it.” Colton immediately regretted the words as they fell from his mouth.

Kandace hunched over, focused on walking, picking up the pace and Colton realized he’d just said the wrong thing again. He kept doing that. It was like he had no more manners. Had because something gruff and stupid in a time where survival was crucial seemed to be the only way to communicate.

“Hey,” he jogged to catch up.
